A cure worse than the disease? Social assistance in 18th-Century Brandon

In 2006 BDLHS member, Leigh Driver, undertook an MSc in English Local History at the University of Oxford. Working with primary sources, including the Town Book, Leigh’s dissertation examined the social dynamics between the rich and poor of Brandon in the 18th century, focusing on the local implementation of national Poor Relief legislation, and her talk will draw on that research in an attempt to answer a question frequently asked about the various strategies for social assistance at the time: “Was the cure worse than the disease?”

Leigh will also discuss the pros and cons of being a mature student!

All are welcome. Admission £2 members £3 non-members
