A Visit to Great War Huts museum

Blog

On Wednesday 25th March 2026, Committee members John Bowes and Steve Dingley paid a visit to an interesting new museum in Hawstead just south of Bury St Edmunds. It is under development and is not yet open to the public, but visits are possible with prior arrangement. There is no entry charge but a donation to help with the running of the site is encouraged.

The museum features military huts that date back to World War I which have been ‘saved’ and re-assembled and repaired for display and for historic interest. There are a number of different huts on view, and there are artefacts and military uniforms on display for the period. A series of WWI trenches have also been created which are accessible to visitors.

The tour of the site starts with an hour long presentation showing how the whole idea was hatched and the many interesting circumstances and assistance given to the owners to make the project possible.

John & Steve thoroughly enjoyed their visit, and will suggest that the museum is suitable for a group visit as other members of BDLHS will undoubtedly be interested. More will be said about this at our upcoming meetings.
