Brandon Station History

Although named for the Suffolk town, the station buildings lie north of the county boundary, within the parish of Weeting.

Brandon station was designed by John Thomas for the Norwich & Brandon Railway in 1844. From the west, Brandon was to be connected to the Eastern Counties Railway from Newport, Essex. These lines formed the connection to allow through trains from Norwich to reach London.

Before the line opened, the N&B merged with the Yarmouth & Norwich Railway to form the Norfolk Railway. The line was due to open on 9th July 1845, but this was delayed to the end of the month. According to the Norfolk Chronicle of 12th July 1845, the delay was attributed to the need to rebuild a section of embankment that had been found to have an unsecure base.

When new, a six-road engine shed was provided to allow locomotives to be serviced. The importance of this facility was reduced after the ECR took over the NR in 1848.

The station buildings were extended in the 1870s and 80s. The goods yard was situated to the north of the through lines and handled a wide range of freight.

Newspaper reports and the decennial census returns have allowed a list of stationmasters to be compiled. The list is most probably incomplete and will be updated as further information comes to light.
